A RESOLUTION HONORING AUGUSTA Y. THOMAS BY DEDICATING THE CORNER OF SHASTA TRAIL AND ILEX AVENUE AS "AUGUSTA Y. THOMAS WAY" IN HER HONOR.

WHEREAS, Augusta Y. Thomas was committed to the labor and civil rights movement for more than 40 years;
WHEREAS, Augusta Y. Thomas was a courageous champion for fairness and equality, a steadfast public servant and a devoted Matriarch;
WHEREAS, August Y. Thomas served as the National Vice President for the American Federation of Government Employees ("AFGE") for Women and Fair Practices and named as an emeritus officer at the 41st National Convention;
WHEREAS, Augusta Y. Thomas was an ally to the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) community establishing the AFGE Pride program to make AFGE a safe zone for all AFGE;
WHEREAS, Augusta Y. Thomas served as a Nursing Assistant at the Louisville VA Hospital receiving numerous awards and proclamations for her untiring activities; and
WHEREAS, Augusta Y. Thomas is a proud lifelong Louisville resident and the recipient of the Key to the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: August Y. Thomas's dedicated service and commitment to Louisville Metro is hereby recognized with the placement of an honorary street sign on Shasta Trail and Ilex Avenue, Louisville, Kentucky, and so designated as "Augusta Y. Thomas Way."
SECTION II: The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with the fabrication and installation of the honorary street sign upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense.
SECTION III: This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval or otherwise becoming law.
