WHEREAS, 18th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard in West Louisville is the location of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, the structure formerly known as the Historic Trolley Barn Building that was once used for transportation purposes beginning in 1879; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage continues to be the enhancement and enrichment of this architectural treasure, highlighting African American history and contributions, including a mixture of cultural, social, and educational programing and commerce in a complex that includes schools and historic churches; and
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage hosts educational and entertainment exhibits and events, which convey the amazing stories of famous and historically significant African Americans from Louisville and the surrounding regions, and showcase their contributions to the community's rich history, while focusing on culturally and regionally unique characteristics; and
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and is located in the Russell Neighborhood, the heart of the African American Community, and now stands as a monument to the determination of many individuals who worked tirelessly to visualize, plan, negotiate, and complete the financing and rehabilitation of this remarkable structure and several other venerable institutions in the Russell neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Governor Paul E. Patton, who served as the 59th governor from 1995 to 2003, was the hub among spokes that kept the wheels of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage Initiative on track and progressing toward completion, garnering ...
