A RESOLUTION URGING THE KENTUCKY GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO REJECT HOUSE BILL 605 REGARDING ELECTIONS IN LOUISVILLE.

WHEREAS, on November 7, 2000, almost 300,000 Jefferson County residents voted on a proposal to create the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government (“Louisville Metro”); and
WHEREAS, the plan presented to the voters in 2000 called for partisan races for the Offices of Mayor, the 26 members of Louisville Metro Council and the County Judge Executive; and
WHEREAS, with the filing of House Bill 605, Frankfort has chosen to ignore the wishes of the majority of Metro Louisville residents and order that these Louisville Metro elections be conducted on a non-partisan basis; and
WHEREAS, House Bill 605 has been filed without giving the residents of Louisville Metro an opportunity to vote on whether to hold partisan or non-partisan elections; and
WHEREAS, House Bill 605 singles out Louisville Metro in being forced to hold non-partisan elections.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT (“THE COUNCIL”) AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I. The Council urges the Kentucky General Assembly to reject House Bill 605 and leave the question of how to conduct Louisville Metro elections to Louisville Metro voters.
SECTION II: This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
