TITLE
A RESOLUTION HONORING GOVERNOR PAUL E. PATTON FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE KENTUCKY CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE.

WHEREAS, 18th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard in West Louisville is the location of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, the structure formerly known as the Historic Trolley Barn Building that was once used for transportation purposes beginning in 1879; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage continues to be the enhancement and enrichment of this architectural treasure, highlighting African American history and contributions, including a mixture of cultural, social, and educational programing and commerce in a complex that includes schools and historic churches; and
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage hosts educational and entertainment exhibits and events, which convey the amazing stories of famous and historically significant African Americans from Louisville and the surrounding regions, and showcase their contributions to the community’s rich history, while focusing on culturally and regionally unique characteristics; and
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and is located in the Russell Neighborhood, the heart of the African American Community, and now stands as a monument to the determination of many individuals who worked tirelessly to visualize, plan, negotiate, and complete the financing and rehabilitation of this remarkable structure and several other venerable institutions in the Russell neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Governor Paul E. Patton, who served as the 59th governor from 1995 to 2003, was the hub among spokes that kept the wheels of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage Initiative on track and progressing toward completion, garnering a total of $10 million dollars in contributions from various entities including the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the Disadvantaged Minority Craftsman Training Program in Historic Preservation, Louisville Jefferson County Metro Government, the Kentucky African American Heritage Foundation, the Kentucky Heritage Council, and the Federal Highway Administration; and
WHEREAS, the contributions of Governor Paul E. Patton were so crucial to the successful completion of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage it is necessary and appropriate to publicly acknowledge his leadership, guidance, and inspiration.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT (“METRO COUNCIL”) AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: Metro Council hereby recognizes Governor Paul E. Patton for his invaluable contribution to the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, and with this resolution, expresses its deep appreciation for his efforts.
SECTION II: This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval or otherwise becoming law.
