A RESOLUTION HONORING MR. FRED T. STONER, SR. BY NAMING THE CORNER OF ROSELANE STREET AND SOUTH HANCOCK STREET AS “FRED T. STONER, SR. WAY” IN HIS HONOR.

WHEREAS, Metro Council considers the honorary naming of its streets after its citizens to foster a continued sense of community, place, and history; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Fred T. Stoner, Sr. was a pillar of Louisville’s Smoketown Community. He mentored countless youth over the years, teaching discipline, structure, and self-respect. He showed the youth of Smoketown how to persevere during a time when opportunity and access were limited for African Americans; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stoner, Sr. taught Muhammad Ali the foundations of boxing during Ali’s formative years. Mr. Stoner, Sr.’s lessons on footwork, focus, and form stayed with Ali throughout his career. Ali acknowledged Mr. Stoner’ Sr.’s instruction was instrumental. Mr. Stoner, Sr.’s work took place in a building that already bears his name, the Fred Annex Building; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stoner, Sr.’s commitment to Smoketown is a legacy for the community. Mr. Stoner, Sr.’s memory is honored through an annual day in Smoketown. Every June 16 Smoketown proclaims as “Fred T. Stoner, Sr. Day.” On this day the community celebrates Mr. Stoner, Sr.’s community values. Those showing Mr. Stoner, Sr.’s commitment to service, stewardship, and education of Smoketown’s youth receive recognition through Freddie’s Flowers, a community award.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:

 

SECTION I: Mr. Fred T. Stoner, Sr.’s dedicated service and commitment to Louisville Metro is hereby recognized by naming the corner of Roselane Street and South Hancock Street as “Fred T. Stoner, Sr. Way.”

SECTION II: The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with the fabrication and installation of the honorary street signs upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense. 

SECTION III:                     This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval or otherwise becoming law.
