A RESOLUTION HONORING OCTOBER 2 AS NONVIOLENT LOUISVILLE DAY.

WHEREAS, on June 27, 2007 the United Nations adopted a Resolution observing October 2 of each year as the International Day of Non-Violence, honoring the legacy of Mahatma Ghandi and non-violent leaders; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations invited all member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organizations, and individuals to commemorate the International Day of Non-Violence in an appropriate manner and to disseminate a message of non-violence through public education and awareness; and
WHEREAS, the Nonviolent Louisville movement has garnered civic and faith community commitments to learn and practice non-violence by disseminating a message of non-violence through public education and awareness, in keeping with the letter and spirit of the United Nations Resolution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT (“METRO COUNCIL”) AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: Metro Council hereby supports the Nonviolent Louisville Movement by:
Recognizing the contributions of the Nonviolent Louisville Movement toward creating a more peaceful community; and
Encourages residents and businesses in Louisville/Jefferson County to show their appreciation for the Nonviolent Louisville Movement through acts of kindness.
SECTION II: Metro Council hereby encourages educators, students, public officials, professional organizations, corporations, and all Louisville Metro residents to observe Nonviolent Louisville Day with appropriate programs and activities that encourage practicing non-violence.
SECTION III: This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval or otherwise as provided by law.
