Resolution No. _____, Series 2016

TITLE

A RESOLUTION OF THE LOUISVILLE METRO COUNCIL RECOMMENDING THE DEDICATION OF CHAMPIONS PARK FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW SOCCER STADIUM.

BODY

Sponsored By:  COUNCIL MEMBER DAN JOHNSON

WHEREAS, attendance during the first year of the Louisville City FC’s 11 regular season home games was the second highest of the 24 clubs in the United Soccer League (USL);

WHEREAS, the USL has requested its franchises each play in a soccer-specific stadium by 2020;

WHEREAS, constructing a new soccer-specific stadium that has the ability to expand to a seating capacity of 20,000 would significantly increase Louisville Metro’s probability of attracting a Major League Soccer franchise;

WHEREAS, Louisville Metro’s Champions Park, which is currently underutilized, is an ideal site for a new soccer stadium in that it is located in close proximity to downtown Louisville with convenient interstate highway access, and is large enough to house a soccer-specific stadium seating 9,000 with the capability to expand to 20,000, a team shop, offices, training ground, and youth academy; and

WHEREAS, Louisville City FC’s use of Slugger Field is not financially sustainable on a long-term basis;

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT (THE COUNCIL) AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION I:                     That the Council does hereby support and recommend the dedication of Champions Park by Metro Government for the construction of a new soccer-specific stadium.

SECTION II:                      This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
