A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF MAY 16, 2016 AS INFRASTRUCTURE WEEK.

body

Sponsored By:   Council Member Johnson and Owen

WHEREAS, Louisville Metro Government relies on critical infrastructure, including our roads and bridges, our railroads and transit systems, our river and airports, our pipes and water system, our reliable power supply, our access to broadband, and our connectivity to the regional, national, and global economy; and

WHEREAS, this infrastructure enhances our local and regional economy, our quality of life, our safety, and our sense of community; and

WHEREAS, decades of underfunding and deferred maintenance have pushed infrastructure across the country to the brink of a national crisis, with preventable catastrophic failures occurring in communities nationwide; and

WHEREAS, the United States of America risks losing its competitive advantage to foreign economies by failing to adequately invest in its infrastructure; and

WHEREAS, America’s poorly-funded infrastructure and transportation systems are more than a drag on the economy, they can be harmful to our health and safety, even though tragedies resulting from infrastructure failures are most often preventable with adequate investment; and

WHEREAS, every dollar invested in infrastructure generates nearly two dollars in economic output; and

WHEREAS, to grow our economy, keep Americans safe, and strengthen our communities, we need all levels of government and the private sector to work together to rebuild and repair our nation’s infrastructure; and

WHEREAS, Infrastructure Week 2016 has been established to highlight infrastructure needs in communities throughout the country and to recognize and encourage continued leadership at the federal, state, and local levels to address our nation’s pressing infrastructure challenges; and

WHEREAS, Infrastructure Week is being recognized across the nation the week of May 16th, 2016.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT (THE COUNCIL) AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION I:  That Louisville Metro Government officially recognizes the week of May 16th, 2016 as Infrastructure Week, and urges the citizens of Louisville join in this special observance.

SECTION II:  That despite fiscal challenges, it is important for Louisville Metro Government to dedicate sufficient resources to transportation and infrastructure investments in our community.

SECTION III:  That a copy of this Resolution of the Louisville Metro Council be delivered to the state and federal elected officials representing our community and its residents.

SECTION IV:  This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
