WHEREAS, Dr. Awkard has been the Pastor of New Zion Baptist Church in Louisville since October 1972.
WHEREAS, Dr. Awkard led the church in building a new edifice in 1973-1974, due to a devastating fire at the church before his arrival, and expanded the facility in 1985-1986.
WHEREAS, under Dr. Awkard's leadership, numerous outreach projects have been developed by New Zion-at home and abroad-including television, jail and prison ministries.
WHEREAS, under Dr. Awkard's leadership, New Zion sponsored a 122-bed nursing home (1983-2011), a 72,000-square-foot community center (2002-2011), and launched a free boarding school for middle school boys (2006).
WHEREAS, Dr. Awkard served as President of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention (1991-1994), Moderator of the Central District Association (1989-1995), and Moderator of the General Association of Baptists in Kentucky (2004-2009).
WHEREAS, Dr. Awkard is President of Rodgers-Awkard & Lyons Funeral Home.
WHEREAS, Dr. Awkard is married to the Honorable Pamela E. Bridgewater Awkard, retired United States Ambassador to Benin, Ghana, and Jamaica.
WHEREAS, Dr. Awkard is the father to two daughters, Alicia and Alma, and stepson, Clarence Benboa (Venita). He also is the grandfather to four grandchildren.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/ JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: Dr. A. Russell Awkard's service to Louisville Metro be honored with an honorary street sign at Southern Avenue and Louis Coleman Jr. Drive in Louisville, Kentucky designated as "A. Russell Awkard Way." The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with fabrication and installation of the honorary street sign upon the passage of the resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense.
