A RESOLUTION HONORING THE CATHEDRAL OF THE ASSUMPTION’S MISSION TO SERVE THE LESS FORTUNATE IN DOWNTOWN LOUISVILLE METRO BY DEDICATING THE ALLEY AT THE CORNER OF WEST MUHAMMAD ALI AND CATHEDRAL WAY TO BE NAMED BOLOGNA ALLEY IN ITS HONOR.

WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Assumption placed its cornerstone in 1849, then completed its construction and opened its doors in 1852;

WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Assumption has been serving not only the needs of its parishioners but also the spiritual and social needs of the downtown Louisville community since the 1930s when the Great Depression and later the Great Flood in Louisville devastated the community;

WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Assumption began a mission to feed the hungry and started serving sandwiches, most often bologna sandwiches, from various places on the Cathedral’s property and later built a kitchen that opens onto the alley behind the Cathedral to take this mission to the next level;

WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Assumption has been serving lunches since the 1930s and served over 39,000 lunches in 2016; and

WHEREAS, the Cathedral of the Assumption is blessed with over 400 unique volunteers that make the mission to serve less fortunate brothers and sisters a success, including retirees, employees from large corporations and small downtown offices, and students from local schools and universities.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION I:  The Cathedral of the Assumption’s mission to serve the less fortunate members of the Louisville Metro community is hereby recognized with the placement of an honorary street sign at the corner of the alley located at West Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Cathedral Way in Louisville, Kentucky, and so designated as “Bologna Alley.”

SECTION II:  The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with fabrication and installation of an honorary sign upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense.

SECTION III:                      This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
