A RESOLUTION HONORING DR. F. BRUCE WILLIAMS BY DEDICATING THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF CLAY AND LAMPTON STREETS TO BE NAMED “DR. F. BRUCE WILLIAMS WAY” IN HIS HONOR.

WHEREAS, Dr. F. Bruce Williams was born to Rev. Earl B. and Norrene T. Williams at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia on July 19, 1959;

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams and his wife, Dr. Michelle Williams, have two daughters, Imani and Nailah Cymone.

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams graduated Summa Cum Laude from Florida A&M University, obtained his Masters of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and earned his Doctorate in Ministry from the United Theological Seminary;

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams is committed to changing the lives of the marginalized people that society has forgotten;

WHEREAS, in 1986, after serving as an associate minister, Dr. Williams was installed as Senior Pastor at Bates Memorial Baptist Church in the Smoketown neighborhood in Louisville, which is considered one of Louisville’s poorest neighborhoods, and under Dr. Williams’ leadership the church has grown exponentially in membership and ministry opportunities;

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams is Chairman of the Board for the Bates Community Development Corporation, is a board member of Metro Bank and the trustee board of Simmons College of Kentucky, formerly served on the African American Pulpit Advisory Board, and is a Bingham Fellows Graduate.  

WHEREAS, Dr. Williams has been honored in numerous ways, including, but not limited to, being inducted into the William H. Sheppard Excellence in the Community Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Presbyterian Community Center Hall of Fame in 2007; being nominated for the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame; having his sermon The Marks of an Irresistible Church featured in the Summer 2006 edition of The African American Pulpit; being featured in the inaugural edition of Who’s Who in Black Louisville; receiving the United Theological Seminary Alumni’s Effective Ministry Award in 2007 and the Greatest Husband in Louisville Award in 2011; and in 2014, being honored by the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and listed as one of the top ten influential religious leaders in Louisville;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT (“COUNCIL”) AS FOLLOWS:

 

SECTION I.   Dr. F. Bruce Williams’ service to Louisville Metro is hereby recognized with the placement of honorary street sign at the northwest corner of Clay and Lampton Streets in Louisville, Kentucky, and so designated as “Dr. F. Bruce Williams Way.”

SECTION II:  The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with fabrication and installation of honorary signs upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense.

SECTION III:                      This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
