A RESOLUTION HONORING DR. CHARLIE W. JOHNSON BY DEDICATING THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF 16TH AND MAPLE STREETS TO BE NAMED “CHARLIE JOHNSON WAY” IN HIS HONOR.

WHEREAS, Dr. Charlie W. Johnson was born in Columbus, Georgia, but has since left his mark on Louisville as an athlete, philanthropist, and business man.
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson came to Louisville to play football for the University of Louisville, and following his success there, went on to play professional football with the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Colts, and won a Super Bowl with each team.
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson has a Doctorate of Law from Benedict College and has been honored with a Doctorate of Humane Letter from Wilberforce University.
WHEREAS, since 1984, Dr. Johnson has started numerous successful businesses, which include Active Transportation and Xpress. He not only located the headquarters for Xpress in Louisville’s west end, but also built six homes there for the drivers that worked for his company.
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson was committed to the growth of his own businesses, but was also committed to helping other minority-owned firms develop by purchasing over $25 million in supplies from them.
WHEREAS, knowing the power of higher education, Dr. Johnson has funded $300,000 in scholarships for Louisville youth to attend Benedict College. He has also given generously to Benedict College’s athletics program and invested locally in Simmons College.
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson’s philanthropy also extends to other local entities in Louisville, including, but not limited to, providing funds for the Christian Care Communities to build a community room and Quinn Chapel AME to build a new facility in the inner city of Louisville.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: Dr. Charlie W. Johnson’s service to Louisville Metro is hereby recognized with the placement of honorary street sign at the northwest corner of 16th and Maple Streets in Louisville, Kentucky, and so designated as “Charlie Johnson Way.”
SECTION II: The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with fabrication and installation of honorary signs upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense.
SECTION III: This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
