AN ORDINANCE AMENDING LMCO CHAPTERS 32.840 AND 32.850 WITH RESPECT TO COMPENSATION FOR PLANNING COMMISSION AND BOARD OF ZONING ADJUSTMENT MEMBERS (AS AMENDED).

WHEREAS, land use planning is an essential component of local government and economic development;
WHEREAS, securing, retaining and motivating appointees to the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Adjustment ("BOZA") is vital to ensure that land use decisions are made by the most qualified, competent and motivated individuals;
WHERAS, adequate compensation will assist in attracting a more diverse pool of volunteers from throughout the community to serve on the Planning Commission and BOZA.
WHEREAS, Planning Commission and BOZA members are compensated at the rate of $50 per public hearing and not to exceed $1,500.00 per annum, which rate has been in effect for the past fourteen years;
WHEREAS, compensation limited to attendance at public hearings is inadequate compensation due to the fact that Planning Commission members must review minutes, staff reports and plans, and attend standing committee meetings such as the Land Development and Transportation Committee and the Design Review Committee, as well as to attend required training sessions; and
WHEREAS, an increase in compensation for the Planning Commission and BOZA members will aid in recruiting, retaining and motivating volunteers to serve on these Boards;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDAINED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: LMCO 32.840 is hereby amended as follows:
(A)(4) All members of the Planning Commission shall be reimbursed for any necessary authorized expenses, and citizen members shall receive additional compensation of $5075100 for each Commission meeting attended, but no such member shall be paid more than $2,2503,000 ...
