A RESOLUTION HONORING REV. CHARLES H. DUNCAN, SR. BY DEDICATING THE CORNER OF 36TH STREET AND VIRGINIA AVENUE TO BE NAMED “REV. CHARLES H. DUNCAN WAY” IN HIS HONOR.

WHEREAS, Rev. Charles H. Duncan was born in Louisville to the late Janie and George Duncan;

WHEREAS, Rev. Duncan was married to the late Ruth Ella Bohannon Duncan for over 60 years and has eight children, ten grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild;

WHEREAS, Rev. Duncan graduated as valedictorian of his class from Simmons Bible College in 1967 with a Bachelor of Theology and, in 1978, Simmons Bible College awarded him with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity;

WHEREAS, Rev. Duncan was first licensed in 1961 and then ordained on January 2, 1968 by Bates Memorial Baptist Church;

WHEREAS, Rev. Duncan is currently the Pastor of First Virginia Avenue Baptist Church where he celebrated his 33rd Pastoral Anniversary in April, making him the longest serving pastor in the churches 134 years; 

WHEREAS, Rev. Duncan was formerly the pastor the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield, KY and the Beargrass Missionary Baptist Church, where he served for over 20 years;

WHEREAS, for his service in Louisville, Rev. Duncan has received many accolades and recognitions, including Distinguished Citizen of Louisville (which he was awarded three times), a Certificate of Appreciation from both Louisville and Jefferson County; Premier Reviewer and Teacher in Louisville and Jefferson County; Honorary Member of the Pleasantview Baptist Church; Honorary Captain of the Belle of Louisville; Kentucky Colonel; and received proclamations from both the Louisville Mayor and the Jefferson County Judge/Executive in 2000;

WHEREAS, Rev. Duncan is extremely active in our community and his ministerial calling has led him to serve in numerous positions on boards and commissions and in local churches, schools, and organizations, including professor, published author, dean, Sunday school teacher, instructor, guest lecturer, guest speaker, lesson reviewer, writer, board member, and co-president; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Council would like to thank Rev. Duncan for his dedication and service to our community with the placement of an honorary street sign.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:

 

SECTION I:                      Rev. Duncan’s service to Louisville Metro is hereby recognized with the placement of an honorary street sign on the corner of 36th Street and Virginia Avenue next to the First Virginia Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and so designated as “Rev. Charles H. Duncan Way.”

SECTION II:                      The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with the fabrication of two honorary signs and the installation of one honorary signs upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense.  The second honorary sign will be presented to the family.

SECTION III:                      This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
