WHEREAS, John Stephen Asher was an iconic member of Churchill Downs and the Louisville community;
WHEREAS, John was born on November 22, 1955 in Leitchfield, Kentucky and died on August 27, 2018;
WHEREAS, John graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in Journalism and was later recognized as the "Public Relations Practitioner of the Year" by the Western Kentucky University School of Journalism and Broadcasting and also received the Summit Award for his volunteer efforts at the university;
WHEREAS, John was an award-winning radio journalist at WHAS-AM and WAVE-AM in Louisville where he earned five Eclipse Awards for Outstanding National Radio Coverage of Thoroughbred Racing and countless other honors, including the National Headliner and Scripps-Howard Award and being named "Best Reporter" in large market radio in Kentucky by the Associated Press seven times;
WHEREAS, in 2010, John was selected as one of Leadership Louisville's Connectors for his distinctive style of trusted leadership in the community;
WHEREAS, John joined Churchill Downs in 1997 and became the Vice President of Racing Communications at Churchill Downs in 1999;
WHEREAS, John and his wife, Dee, have three children, Heather, Erin, and Emma, two grandchildren, Caden and Cameron, and a very large extended family; and
WHEREAS, Metro Council wishes to honor John for his leadership and dedication to the Louisville community.
