A RESOLUTION HONORING GEORGE E. FISCHER BY DEDICATING THE CORNER OF EAST WITHERSPOON STREET AND NORTH FLOYD STREET AS “GEORGE E. FISCHER WAY” IN HIS HONOR.

WHEREAS, George E. Fischer, a native of the Shawnee neighborhood, contributed his many talents and energy both to the nation and the local community during his full and vibrant life of 90 years;
WHEREAS, Mr. Fischer served in the United States Air Force as a jet pilot, holding the rank of Captain;
WHEREAS, Mr. Fischer was a talented entrepreneur; after leaving his position of sale manager of IBM”s Manhattan branch at IBM in 1968, he became the CEO of Louisville’s Metridata Computing Inc. which became “one of the largest remote computer processing companies in the Midwest;” Mr. Fischer sold the company in 1979, and then in 1980, he founded, along with his sons, SerVend International, which grew to be the largest maker of ice- and beverage-dispensing systems in the world;
WHEREAS, Mr. Fischer was inducted into the Kentucky Entrepreneur Hall of Fame, along with numerous other awards, including: Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Louisvillian of the Year, Cathedral Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award, Spalding University Honorary Doctor of Public Service, Outstanding Kentuckian Award, and Community Leader of the Year;
WHEREAS, Mr. Fischer served Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown, III as Secretary of the Cabinet; Mr. Fischer also served on numerous boards, including: the University of Louisville’s Board of Trustees as a two-term chair, UofL Athletic Association, Junior Achievement, Jewish Hospital, Goals for Greater Louisville, Dare to Care, National Restaurant Association Education Foundation, Manitowoc Company, Henry Vogt Foundation, Republic Bank and Trust, Belle of Louisville, Thomas Merton Foundation, and the Center for Interfaith Relations;
WHEREAS, Mr. Fischer co-founded numerous charities, including: the Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program, School Choice Scholarships, and, along with his wife Mary Lee, the Family Community Clinic, which provides free healthcare to low-income families; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Fischer served his community with grace, showing by example that caring for others and leaving the world a better place are the best things anyone can accomplish.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I: George E. Fischer’s service to this community and the citizens of Louisville Metro is hereby recognized with the placement of an honorary street sign on East Witherspoon Street and the intersecting corner of North Floyd Street, and so designated as “George E. Fischer Way.”
SECTION II: The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with the fabrication and installation of this honorary street sign upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover its expense.
SECTION III: The Department of Public Works shall fabricate a second sign, upon receipt of funds to cover its expense, for Mrs. Fischer and the family;
SECTION IV: This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval or otherwise becoming law.
