TITLE

A RESOLUTION HONORING MITZI MCCAULEY WILSON BY NAMING THE CORNER OF 12TH STREET AND JEFFERSON STREET AS “MITZI MCCAULEY WILSON WAY” IN HER HONOR.

WHEREAS, Metro Council considers the honorary naming of its streets after its citizens to foster a continued sense of community, place, and history; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mitzi McCauley Wilson was a resident of Beecher Terrace Apartments from 1971 to 1989. Throughout her life there, she was a dedicated advocate for the Beecher Terrace Community; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mitzi McCauley Wilson remains involved in young peoples’ lives in her community. She often hosts sleepovers for the youth of her church, Galilee Baptist Church. She organizes with Black Lives Matter Louisville. She formed a committee in 2017 to bring together Beecher Terrace residents for Beecher Day, a day of food, fun, entertainment, and fellowship. She hosted a community water fight in the park in 2025. Mitzi focuses the youth she encounters on life-changing skills, motivation, and education; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mitzi McCauley Wilson was the co-owner of Black Market at 2313 W. Market Street. The store provided healthy food to the community. Hope Village later assumed the space. Mitzi continues to support community food health. She volunteers at several food pantries, including serving as lead cook for a team that provides meals to community members, elders, and individuals experiencing houselessness; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Mitzi McCauley Wilson currently works at the University of Louisville, where she is known affectionately by students as “auntie.” Mitzi continues to wear many hats - wife, mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and daughter.
She is loved by many and has never met a stranger.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE LOUISVILLE/JEFFERSON COUNTY METRO GOVERNMENT AS FOLLOWS:

 

SECTION I: Ms. Mitzi McCauley Wilson’s dedicated service and commitment to Louisville Metro is hereby recognized by naming the corner of 18th Street and Jefferson Street as “Mitzi McCauley Wilson Way”.

SECTION II: The Department of Public Works is hereby directed to move forward with the fabrication and installation of the honorary street signs upon the passage of this Resolution and the receipt of funds to cover the expense. 

SECTION III:                     This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval or otherwise becoming law.
