A RESOLUTION OF LOUISVILLE METRO GOVERNMENT SUPPORTING AN NBA/WNBA TEAM LOCATED IN METRO LOUISVILLE (AS AMENDED)

SPONSORED BY: COUNCILMEMBERS JOHNSON, WOOLRIDGE, HOLLANDER, HAMILTON, PEDEN, JAMES, BENSON, SHANKLIN

 

WHEREAS, Louisville Metro and the surrounding communities have demonstrated strong and longstanding support for the sport of basketball; and

WHEREAS, Louisville Metro has the facilities to accommodate a National Basketball Association (“NBA”) team; and

WHEREAS, the Yum! Center represents one of the best arenas in the country; and

WHEREAS, the recently approved collective bargaining agreement for the National Basketball Association (“NBA”) opens the opportunity for NBA expansion teams; and

WHEREAS, the addition of an NBA team would bring more business for area restaurants and hotels; and

WHEREAS, there would be additional tax receipts for Louisville Metro Government; and

WHEREAS, Louisville Metro would welcome an NBA team to our city; and

WHEREAS, Louisville Metro would welcome a WNBA team to our city; and

WHEREAS, Louisville needs to be in a competitive position for any potential expansion franchises.

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF THE METRO LOUISVILLE GOVERNMENT (THE COUNCIL) AS FOLLOWS:

 

SECTION I: That Louisville Metro Council supports efforts to bring a NBA team and the economic development it would bring to our community.

SECTION II: This Resolution shall take effect upon its passage and approval.
